The
NAETC took place on September 24th in
Greenville, California. The countries
represented in the competition were the
United States, fielding nine teams, and
Canada, which brought one team. Other
countries competing in open international
competition were Sweden, United Kingdom and
Romania.
The following description of the race was
taken from emails from Cheryl:
Cheryl and Reason were
members of zone Pac North’s team. In the
first loop at about mile 7, she was
cantering on a hard packed dirt road. There
were little tiny rocks on it that acted like
little ball bearings when he tried to right
himself with his other foot it slipped out
from under him due to the ball bearings, and
fell flat on our side! Luckily, Cheryl
kicked free of the saddle and didn’t get
seriously hurt, but did take a hit on the
side of her helmet, bruised and scraped her
hip and knee. Reason scraped and bumped his
head and just above his right knee, and his
right hip it was oozing blood. When he
trotted out beautifully, the vet said, “Wow,
he trotted out much better than I thought he
would!!”
All went well till the second to last loop.
Cheryl and Reason were sticking with the
front runners, Jeremy Reynolds, Meg Sleeper
and Becky Hart. They started out on the
second to last loop, a 20 mile loop, feeling
great, cantering and moving out well. Then
he must have had a mild impaction because he
just didn’t feel right! He didn’t want to
move out as usual and he kept grunting and
pushing and farting. They found some water
and Cheryl poured it all over him and he
drank a bunch and started feeling better. He
finally started pooping a bit. He had no
problem eating. They reached the top of the
“hill” about halfway through the 20 mile
loop, then started downhill. Cheryl decided
to run the downhill part and give Reason a
break and hopefully help him to continue to
feel better. More poop was coming out and he
seemed to start to feel better. Reason ate
and drank and they pushed on. Cheryl and
Reason finished in 5th place.
Pac North finished a respectable 6 out of 8
horses, Reason was the only one in the top
ten. They qualified for the selection trial
race next year (in March) for the World
Championship (in England in August), they
got a COC (certificate of capability) which
one earns if you finish a 100 mile race
within a certain time, and earned Reason a
lot of respect.
Our sincere CONGRATULATIONS to Cheryl and
Reason! Despite all their challenges, they
persevered and had a GREAT placing! |
